5 Dumpster Safety Tips

May 1, 2021 by aim-lcire

Using a roll-off dumpster to discard unwanted items is straightforward. However, roll-off dumpsters can pose a safety risk if they are not used properly. To prevent any unwanted mishaps, take a look at these five dumpster safety tips.

Dumpster Safety Tips

Tip #1: Do Not Jump in or Around the Dumpster

Refrain from jumping in or out of any roll-off dumpster. Not only is this dangerous due to the height of the dumpster, but it’s ill-advised because of what could be in the dumpster. You never know what types of material are hiding inside a dumpster, and you could unknowingly land on sharp or hard objects.

Tip #2: Do Not Lift Objects That are Too Heavy

Lifting objects that are too heavy into the dumpster can lead to serious injury. When lifting heavy objects, always lift in pairs — which is standard practice for warehouses and logistics firms. Not only can you prevent injury, but you reduce the time needed to complete each task. If no one is available to help, wait. Never attempt to lift heavy objects on your own.

Tip #3: Do Not Allow Children Near the Dumpster Unattended

Kids are adventurous and can end up in interesting situations. It’s easy for an unattended child to climb inside the dumpster. For that reason, never let kids play around the dumpster, and always keep an eye out for them when they’re closeby.

Tip #4: Do Not Try to Move the Equipment

Once the dumpster arrives, do not try to move it. Moving these bins requires specialty, heavy-duty equipment that the average person does not possess. If you need to move the dumpster, contact your dumpster rental company and have them move it for you.

Tip #5: Do Not Throw Any Hazardous Materials In the Dumpster

Hazardous materials thrown into the dumpster make it dangerous for everyone. Additionally, ask your dumpster rental company about things that can and cannot be placed in the dumpster. Some of the most common items prohibited by rental companies include:

  • Controlled Substances
  • Infectious Waste
  • Liquid Waste
  • Tanks
