5 Things to Consider When Recycling Concrete

October 17, 2022 by aim-ron

Recycling is the process of giving new life to an already existing product. There are lots of things that are recycled, from water bottles, to tires, to concrete. At LCI Recycling, if it’s recyclable, we more than likely recycle it. We recycle a whole lot of concrete; it’s one of the materials we find we work with the most. There are many great uses for recycled concrete, and it can offer you a host of benefits. We wanted to talk today about five things you should consider when looking to recycle concrete or purchase some recycled concrete.

1. You Can Save a Lot on the Cost

Any construction project you’re performing, no matter the size, you likely have a budget for. Anything you can do to help save on cost will be greatly beneficial. One way you can save greatly on building costs is by using recycled concrete. It’s just as durable as regular concrete but comes at a considerably reduced cost.

2. Better for the Environment

The creation of new concrete requires new sand and rock, which must be quarried. Sand and rocks are both somewhat limited resources, and the creation of new quarries involves the destruction of natural habitats. By using recycled concrete for your building project, you’re decreasing the need for new quarries and benefiting the environment.

3. Recycling Can Be Easier Than Discarding

If you have a large amount of concrete you’re just looking to get rid of, your first instinct may be to take it to a dump or rent a dumpster, both of which can have some hefty fees. In most cases, it’s a lot easier and cheaper for you to recycle your concrete instead. You should speak with an experienced Maryland concrete recycling company to see about dropping your concrete off or having it picked up.

4. A Variety of Uses

What specific need do you have for concrete? Recycled concrete can be used in a lot of different applications. It’s commonly turned into pea gravel, and then used for walkways, driveways, backfill, and an aggregate for new concrete. If you have a place you’d like to put concrete, you can use recycled concrete.

5. Steel Needs to Be Removed Before Concrete Can Be Recycled

Many structures constructed using concrete are reinforced with steel rebar. While this steel provides a great deal of strength to the integrity of the structure, it only gets in the way when attempting to recycle the concrete. Machine separators are used to sift bits of steel out, and the concrete is then ready to be recycled.
