Asphalt pavement is the most recycled material in all of America. Each year about 100 million tons of asphalt pavement is reclaimed, and most of that is reused to make new roads and highways. We work with a lot of reclaimed asphalt at LCI Recycling, and wanted to talk about exactly how the pavement recycling process works.
The Asphalt Recycling Process
The process begins with milling, a procedure which removes the top layer of asphalt from a street, parking lot or driveway without disturbing the asphalt base. After it has been milled, the asphalt will be taken to an asphalt plant, where it will be screened and resized. Now it’s ready to be reused.
Environmental Benefits
Recycling, in general, is an environmental effort. It’s the idea that we can reclaim already-produced or already-used materials, and use them to produce new goods. Recycling asphalt reduces the amount of new oil needed in the construction process, helps save on construction materials, and helps alleviate the stress on natural resources.
